Character concepts

A comic idea I've been working on for a long time.
Just to update.

Got a print at Shirt.Woot!

Um, most people who see this blog probably already know about this. Just in case though:

It's bittersweet though. I'm really hoping the halftones come out alright (I noticed some trouble spots after the fact) and it's not exactly 'my best work'...but the whole experience is one that I'm very thankful for, nonetheless.

Thanks everyone who bought/buys a shirt or even just said 'congrats'. It really means a lot to me. :)

Animu

Yeah, yeah. Sometimes Nichol likes to draw 'animu'.

This is a contest piece for a comic I've read for a looong time: Red String
Probably been reading since 2003. It's weird to think about how long certain things have been around. Makes you feel kinda..old..

Woot Derby: Luck

Something I sketched up today for the 'Luck' derby. We'll see if it actually gets finished...

Toy designs

Just for the record, I know these aren't accurate(i.e. the arms are NOT in the right place when you compare the side/front views of each). Plus, the first mate bunny there is going to be much rounder from the side view. I'm just trying to flesh some stuff out..
I've always wanted to make toys. My last clay journey has led me to believe I might be able to try making a few vinyl toys. I'll be sculpting them out of sculpey first...then hopefully I'll be able to make a proper mold and somehow get a hold of a durable model material.. If not that, I might be able to try and put these guys on patchtogether.com . :)

Next: the ship design...(and accessories! mops...booze bottles..treasure!)

A peek into my process

This is a quick look at my process. For the 'Naughty and Nice derby' a few weeks back I drew up these guys with a Sharpe and computer paper. ;)

Then I scanned them in, cleaned them up, and colored'em in.

Harvester of Hearts

My design on Woot.com. I ended up putting it on the asphalt color (which kind of killed my original idea). I got a shout out from BestLoser though! I think I might try to rework this and put it back on white. The inspiration was paper cutting/silhouetting. I love that stuff. :)

Let's Curdle

An image I came up with while sketching some Valentine's Day designs. I was trying to think of something that I hadn't seen before and out popped this.

..But not before making a really horrible one first. I was trying 'I love you Plantains' (a play on the fact that bananas are like them and come in 'bunches'...but it doesn't make any sense because both plantains and bananas come in bunches...and you wouldn't say 'I love you bananas' either.). So you see what I have to work with? My brain is pretty much 90% dumb and 10% luck.

Random Sketches

Just a few random sketches. As you can see, I cannot draw dogs. :( Or people, haha.

Clay monster

Something I'm working on for a friend. I will hopefully be using real fur for his 'mane'(and by 'real fur' I mean fake fur...but still 'fur'). It's my re-interpretation of Carol from Where The Wild Things Are.

Sketches from 2009

Just a compilation of sketches from last year. Some are still in the works.

Thursday, January 21, 2010

Something I was working on at the end of last year for a derby on woot.com. It didn't work out for the derby, but I still liked the illustration overall, so I finished it.

And by 'finished', I mean hurried up and slapped a weird texture on it and messed up the original colors. :\ Whatevs.

Let us begin!

I've decided I need a place other than deviantart to advertise myself. Deviantart is a little bulky and viewers have to click through if they want to see your work. I think a blog will be a little easier to handle...and so! Here I am. :)

Here's to a new year full of art and happiness!

Cheers!
